Established in 1948, the Islamorada Fish Company began as a family owned and operated business supplying wholesale fresh seafood to locals and restaurants. When the Hertel family took it over in 1981 (rumor has it George Hertel won the place in a family card game) they started shipping fresh seafood and serving old family recipes of smoked fish spread, conch salad, conch chowder, and more in the retail market. In 1993, someone contributed a fry daddy deep fry fryer (so the story goes) to the business so the local fisherman could fry fresh caught fish after a hard day of fishing. This became a hit! Two picnic tables and a screened in porch came next - and the rest is history! In 1998 Islamorada Fish Company and the Johnny Morris’s Bass Pro Shops of Springfield Missouri formed a partnership, creating even more national notoriety. After remodeling the old Green Turtle Cannery, the Wholesale Fish Market expanded next door in 1999.
